I am reaching out as a public health promoter for Southern South Island and would like to share some information about The Y 2026 Youth Survey – who are seeking young people aged between 12–24 to take part. There are 15 x $100 vouchers up for grabs.
The Y is keen to understand what rangatahi in South Canterbury are experiencing — their needs, their priorities, what supports are working, and where gaps exist.
Also, if there is something in your community that needs a greater health promotion focus, please feel free to reach out. Many thanks in advance for your support.
Ngā mihi maioha,

Summer internships at Meridian
E rere nei te hā o mihi ki koe
I am excited to share Meridian Energy's Matakahi Internship Programme 2026/27and to ask for your support in promoting this opportunity to rangatahi within your networks.
The Matakahi Internship Programme is a summer internship designed for Māori tertiary students who want more than just work experience. It provides an opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, develop professional skills, build networks, and gain exposure to careers across Meridian Energy. The programme is founded on the concept of Matakahi (the wedge), creating pathways and opportunities where none existed before.
We're keen to hear from Māori students who are currently undertaking tertiary study and have an interest in areas such as:
Engineering
Trades and technical careers
Technology and ICT
Sustainability and environmental disciplines
Communications and community engagement
Human Resources, Organisational Development, Learning & Development and Health & Safety
Innovation, data, and related fields
The internship will run from 9 November 2026 to 5 February 2027 and will be based in either Wellington or Christchurch.
If you know of any rangatahi who may benefit from this experience, we would be grateful if you could forward the attached advert through your networks, student groups, whānau connections, or relevant channels. At Meridian, we're committed to supporting the development of future Māori leaders and creating opportunities for rangatahi to gain real-world experience while bringing their unique perspectives and ideas to our business.
Ngā mihi nui for your support.

Updates supplied by MPI
Situation update: 27 August 2026
New Zealand has 3 confirmed detections of H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu).
New Zealand’s third case of H5 bird flu was confirmed on 21 August in a northern giant petrel, found dead on a remote Cape Palliser beach in the Wairarapa.
There is no evidence of any mass mortality in wildlife. There has been no detection in poultry.
Chicken and eggs remain safe to eat and bird flu is a very low risk to human health. New Zealand is well prepared to respond to H5 bird flu and is working to protect poultry production and reduce impacts on wildlife and communities. Response and surveillance work has intensified in close coordination with industry partners and other agencies.
The Department of Conservation is implementing a vaccination programme for 300 core breeding birds from 5 of our most endangered birds – kākāpō, takahē, tūturuatu/shore plover, kakī/black stilt, and kākāriki karaka/orange-fronted parakeet.
Be alert and use good habits to limit the impact of bird flu:
Keep your distance. Stay away from sick or dead wildlife. Keep pets away too.
Keep clean. Wash your hands and clean your gear after being outdoors.
Know when to report. If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds in a group, report it immediately to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66 or online at report.mpi.govt.nz
If you report online, select the ‘dead or dying wild birds’ option from the dropdown list and then the type of bird you have found. Don’t handle or move the birds.
2027 Te Waiu o Aotearoa Trust Scholarship

Each year, at the trustees’ discretion, up to four Māori recipients throughout Aotearoa are each awarded a $5,000 scholarship towards their tertiary study costs.
The Trust is administered by Westpac New Zealand Limited and applications for 2027 are now open.

Nau mai ki tō tātou Marae bookings e-form.
Kia ora Whānau,
Can we please ensure all marae bookings are made online, and not through a phone call to the Office. This will ensure conflicting dates are picked up by the organiser and will minimise confusion.
Please click on to the registration tab below.
Ngā mihi na Te Tari - Thank you from the Office.
He kōrero whakakapi.
Kia ora tātou,
This is a general reminder for whānau using or booking the marae.
To help maintain the cleanliness and care of the marae, we ask that no kai is left behind, as this has become a health and safety issue. Please ensure all personal property is taken with you upon departure; any unclaimed items will be held temporarily, and if not collected or claimed will be removed permanently.
All pots and pans used in the kīhini must be returned to their original places, and dishes are to be washed and put away—please do not leave them on benches.
Dirty sheets and pillowcases should be placed in a separate pile on top of the mattresses, and must not be mixed with dirty tablecloths, tea towels, or cleaning cloths.
Any toys or items taken from storage are to be returned to where they were found, and all materials brought in for your kaupapa must be taken with you when you leave.
Finally, all whānau should arrange their stay by booking through the website or by notifying Shyra in advance of their arrival.
We appreciate your kind assistance to ensure our marae is kept in a lovely condition for us all.
Ngā mihi mahana
Nā Te Tari
